"I provide services in elementary math, reading, writing, phonics (Orton-Gillingham approach), science, and social studies. I use a one-to-one individualized approach or a diagnostic/prescriptive tactic to determine what is the best direction to take in an effort to guide each individual tutored student.
The Orton-Gillingham method is a sequential (step by step) phonetic analysis method to reading. With this approach, I teach the basics of word formation before associating their whole meanings. The “OG” method utilizes three teaching/learning styles through which people learn: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
A student receives my undivided attention for 60 minutes. During that time, I guide the student at his/her own pace and learning style unlike what can be available in the larger classroom environment. The sequential sessions will contain short varied lessons that will keep the child feeling motivated and comfortable about the process of his/her academic growth. Both praise and constructive criticism is immediate.
The lesson is designed based on the initial and on-going discussions with the parent(s) as to what the child’s academic needs might be. Discussion with the classroom teacher and or report cards/school records is also helpful in designing the most productive sessions.
