"Hello! I like to go by Mari or Marcie.
I’m a junior specialist researcher at UC Riverside preparing to begin my PhD in Plant Pathology this Fall. I graduated from UCR in 2024 with a B.S. in Microbiology, magna cum laude honors, and a 3.92 GPA. I was also the sole recipient of the CNAS Academic Excellence in Microbiology Award for my graduating cohort. Before UCR, I attended Riverside City College, where I graduated with a 3.97 GPA and was recognized as the Student of Distinction in Biology in 2021.
I initially planned to pursue nursing, but my passion for teaching science began when I became a peer instructor at my college. I began tutoring small sessions in anatomy, biology, microbiology, and chemistry, then expanded to leading supplemental instruction sessions for larger groups of 15–40 students, both in person and online. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career as a life science professor, particularly at a community college.
At UCR, I continued mentoring as a peer mentor for transfer students in the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and during summers with the Research in Science and Engineering Program. Now, as a junior specialist researcher, I’m continuing the research I started as an undergraduate, gathering data for my dissertation’s first chapter.
As a tutor, I adapt to a wide range of learning styles. I use a drawing tablet for annotations and illustrations during sessions. Additionally, I provide supplemental resources, including my own Quizlet flashcards and Google Doc study guides for General Biology, Microbiology, General Chemistry, and Psychology. These resources, developed during my time as a supplemental instructor, are included to support you beyond our sessions. I’m happy to share them during our very first session.
With grad school a few months ahead for me, I’m working towards saving up for a car. Every session helps, and I can’t wait to help you in your endeavors too!" less...
