"I am a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan, with an M.A. in history from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduating, I taught history, political science, philosophy, and religion at institutions including the University of Mississippi, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Georgia Southern University, and the University of Guam, where I earned tenure.

After teaching for nineteen years, I moved into administration. For the last twelve years I have been dean or vice president at several community colleges, including Northwest Arkansas and Truckee Meadows.
