"My name is Matthew. I’ve been successfully teaching a wide variety of high school subjects for about 15 years. These include French, English, speech & debate, philosophy, civics & government, history, geography, music and art history, mathematics, and others.

I believe that the richer your learning context, the more deeply you understand. If incorporating aspects of music helps you understand mathematics, that’s fair game. If art history helps you learn French, I’m all for it! Each lesson should have a specific objective, but an occasional tangent or detour can be surprisingly helpful in getting there.

I’m currently a substitute teacher, which I find personally very rewarding. I get to build relationships with the whole faculty and student body (without the worry of grading papers). It’s not uncommon for students to come ask me for help on a math assignment, even if I’m teaching history that day.

My primary goal as a tutor, substitute, or teacher is developing understanding, and putting that understanding into practice. Success and good grades tend to be a natural consequence of solid and practical understanding." less...
