"As long as I can remember, teaching others what I love, history and science, has been a passion of mine. At the University of Maine at Machias, where I recently received my B.A. in Biology with a minor in History, I was able to fulfill that passion by being a student tutor for 3 years. During my years as a tutor I was able to help countless students achieve academic success and even ignited an interest in subjects that they were uninterested in when they came to me.
My areas of expertise lay in the life sciences and in many eras in history such as American and World history. Within these subjects, what I am best at helping students understand are concepts and ideas, so that they not only know what has happened, but why it happened and how it affects us to this day.
My degree is in biology, and at the University of Maine at Machias, I was a teaching assistant in the freshman biology course "Phage Hunters" for 3 years. Each year I helped a new batch of students learn basic scientific protocols and help prepare them for their future scientific studies. I also was a research assistant for 2 years under one of my professors, studying molecular genetics and cancer in the soft-shelled clam.
I received a history minor from the University of Maine at Machias, however, I have had a life-long passion for all things history. My mother is an amateur genealogist and has traced back our family history in this nation the last 400 years. So, learning American history was not just learning my nation's history, it was learning the history of my family. In addition, I have been fascinated with the history of the world and have devoted much of my free time to the study of pharaohs and emperors alike.
I look forward to sharing my love of science and history with as many individuals as I can." less...
