"Hello I'm Ben! I have been fortunate enough to spend the last 7 years as a professional software engineer after graduating with a BA from the University of Utah in 2014. I also have 3 years of experience teaching and mentoring adults at a variety of skill levels from beginner to expert. In that time I worked as the lead instructor at a coding bootcamp where I wrote the curriculum and led a college lecture-style class for a group of 12-15 students. I've mostly focused on coding, but I've also taught music lessons which I think has given me a broader perspective beyond just STEM.
My tutoring approach is inspired greatly by the famed educator and physicist Richard Feynman. To paraphrase, he once said "If you can't explain something in simple terms, you don't understand it well enough". My goal is to take the enormous complexities and abstractions involved in computer science and break them down into their core elements in a way that relates to everyday concepts. Communication, curiosity and experimentation are all necessary parts of the learning process so I encourage students to try things and challenge them to critically think and problem solve.
As your tutor, I can provide guidance on general computer science topics while also specializing in web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I'm looking forward to helping you with your success!" less...
