"Hi! I’m Aleena. I graduated from CUNY Hunter College with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and a minor in Math and Women and Gender Studies. Currently I work at American Express as a Software Engineer. I’ve been tutoring for about 5 years, mostly in math and computer science.

I started tutoring in high school by helping my classmates with our math homework. I previously worked at a math learning center where I mostly worked with groups of elementary to middle school students and helped them get ahead in their mathematical studies. For 3 semesters, I worked as a TA in the computer science department at my school for a python and C++ focused class. As a TA, I provided students with one-on-one help on coding assignments. During my last 2 years of college I was a software engineering intern at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies. I developed a mobile app using JavaScript, React, and React Native to display and monitor data collected by the Research Scanning Polarimeter (RSP) instrument as well as aircraft housekeeping data. I also volunteered as a frontend developer for Develop for Good. Through Develop for Good, I virtually volunteered with a team of developers to create an app for the nonprofit Easterseals to assist veterans with job search and preparation. The app is developed using JavaScript, React, and React Native.

Through my past tutoring experiences, I have learned how to effectively communicate math topics and adapt my teaching for each student to meet their unique needs. Students often feel discouraged when they encounter a topic they have trouble comprehending so I try to make the learning process as enjoyable and motivating as I can. I usually try to get an understanding of what specifically the student needs my help with and how they can move ahead. I also review previous topics to make sure the student is building on their existing knowledge.
