"I have been a Special education tutor for 22 years. When I work with a child, I consider the whole child. Irrespective of the academic issues that the child has, I start out helping the child develop organizational habits and empowering him/her to become self-advocates. I specialize in teaching reading, writing, ands study skills. Most of the kids that I work with have multiple and combined issues ranging from ADHD to dyslexia and beyond.
Pending the areas of disabilities, I work with the parent on creating short and long term remedial goal, and I am always assessing the progress and reporting my findings. Often I work with other educators and attend IEP or other educational meetings where I advocate for the child's accommodations and help create an intervention plan.
On a personal note, I entered the field of learning disabilities when my youngest son was diagnosed with severe learning disabilities. I put him in the Lab School of Washington in 1997 and immediately enrolled in the Master's program for Special education in Learning Disabilities at the American University of Washington D.C. The advantage of the program was that I also got my training at the Lab School and got immersed in the world of learning disabilities. It has been a life-altering and rewarding experience to work with the challenges that are presented through learning disabilities.
