"Tutoring Experience with special needs students resulted in writing my own Phonics (Orton Gillingham) and Basic Math (Multiplication Facts and Fractions) textbooks. Note: Purchase of these textbooks by parents may be required. See Amazon.com Mary M. Schuler.
I encourage at least one person besides the student to participate in the tutoring sessions so that person can follow-up (practice) with the student before the next lesson.
My method for teaching multiplication facts works for students who have been unable to master their facts because it requires the student to THINK first how to solve that particular fact (skip counting, 9’s rule, or memorized) and then solve.
I teach reading based on Orton-Gillingham phonics —- introducing the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary phonetically. (50% of all words in stories because they are so common). My vowel reference card teaches the most common vowel sounds (40 sounds) requiring the student to spot those single or combination of letter sounds first and then read the word.
My minor concentration for my master’s degree was in reading.
It is easier to teach a student to read words then to spell them as there are too many spelling options in English! I teach students to write out the most common spelling options (based on my Vowel Reference Card) and then pick the one that looks correct based on the fact that students reading level is often two years higher than their spelling level!!!
I’d love to hear from you, just to talk, concerning your child needs and the kind of tutor you’d like to find for your child.
Note: Because I don't own a car, I borrow my son's but only when it is available. Therefore, transportation might be a real issue, and something we need to discuss before arranging for tutoring sessions." less...
