I use frequent informal assessment to figure out where a student is in terms of understanding the content, and build up that knowledge with a combination of direct instruction, scaffolded guided questioning, Socratic discussion, and constructivist methods in every study session; the specific dynamic is customized to each student's needs and preferences. When trouble-shooting work in progress, students participate in actively correcting and improving their work using their developing knowledge, while I give specific corrective feedback when necessary.
My tutoring approach blends the dynamic of academic "office hours" with that of an industry "project meeting" - a goal-oriented and cognitively-involved approach to studies that allows the student to master the material and become an expert in content standards, completing assignments and assessments with fluency and confidence. Students actively use the class text and notes to put together comprehensive strategies for conceptual understanding and applied problem solving.
I provide materials including additional practice problems (with verified answer keys), additional textbook references, printouts of diagrams and graphs that demonstrate concepts and applied problem solving, and links to online resources to clarify and reinforce the content of our study sessions.
