Ph.D., History. Stanford University
B.A., History, summa cum laude. University of California, Berkeley
I graduated at the top of my class in the History Department at UC Berkeley before receiving a Fulbright scholarship and then my doctorate at Stanford. I was a TA and course instructor at Stanford and taught history at UMass Amherst. I have a passion for languages. I read Russian, German, Serbian, Albanian, and Spanish, and have taken courses in Zapotec and Mixteco. I have worked as an online tutor for 10 years and have had success with many students, ranging from high school to college-age, and non-traditional students. My love of teaching comes from a life of learning, respect for my students, fascination with cultures, obsession with detail, and curiosity about the world. I am currently writing a book on democracy and dictatorship in the Balkans.
I specialize in essays for university and high school courses in the humanities and social sciences, essays for college applications, AP US History/US Government/European History/World History, and English and Spanish grammar/literature. In addition, I work with high scorers in all sections of the GRE, LSAT, SAT and ACT, including Math/Quantitative. I coach high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Lessons are virtual.
I believe in mentorship, in giving students the tools and confidence to make discoveries and confront challenges. Every student is different and will receive tailored instruction. As a mentor, I work hard for my students as I guide them toward their academic goals. Our lessons are about a specific target, such as getting a good grade on a paper, submitting a college application essay, or understanding a foreign language, but also about improving study habits, reading and analyzing lots of material efficiently, and thinking critically.
