I usually go through tutoring by creating example problems and working through them step-by-step, breaking down each part. I will expect students to be paying attention, so if I make a mistake, they should be able to catch it. NOTE: I will occasionally make mistakes on purpose to see if students are listening.
If I have access to a whiteboard, I utilize three colored markers to help show students what exactly I am doing in each step, and to make rules and exceptions stand out from the rest of the work.
