"Hi, I'm Pierre! I'm a mathematics teacher, and I hold master's degrees in math and in education. I also earned a PhD in applied math in acoustics - I'm a violin player too! I tutored students in France for 10 years, following them long-term when needed as we got to know each other well and be super productive. Just like when you work on any skill, my students appreciated steady and encouraging practice.
During my PhD, I was in charge of math labs for biology undergrads. It was a great experience in teaching more advanced math to a heterogenous audience that needed adequate support, being out of their comfort zone. Then I moved to the US, and first I taught middle school math in French immersion, translating and adapting the curriculum based on the Louisiana standards. I loved the unique challenges where I would support French learners making sense of "the math", and getting their point across when they needed clarification and hints. Then I taught in high school, with three very different courses: preparation for ACT WorkKeys Applied Math, International Baccalaureate (analysis and approaches SL, applications and interpretation SL), and finally, Probability and Statistics. The broad range of content and skills my students had to master gave me opportunities to better myself as a teacher. My favorite part of class was always walking around and helping out self-selected groups: when students are surrounded by their friends, they feel comfortable asking for help, whether it's their friends or me.
I'm easy to reach and I care about responding very promptly to families and students. Looking forward to working with you!" less...
