I am a recently retired professor who taught playwriting and screenwriting on the graduate level for over twenty years and fiction and creative nonfiction on the undergraduate level.
If we are working online, you will send your writing through email and we will meet through skype, and I will also send written comments. We can also work just though email. If we are meeting face to face (you must be fully vaccinated if you come to my house), we’ll talk about the work and I will have written comments. I can also meet publicly within five miles of my home.
My approach stresses finding a voice through character, dialog as a heightened reality that reveals character and furthers the story, something different than everyday conversation. Feedback in fiction will stress a voice that keeps readers engaged and plot construction. Nonfiction will look at the interplay between the personal and factual. You can work on a play, screenplay, TV pilot, short story and creative nonfiction. I work only with students 18 years and older (seniors in high school are an exception) and adults.
My students have been accepted into MFA programs, a few have been produced in NY and nationally, a couple have managed indie film deals, and a few have won awards. I am always supportive no matter the subject, and my aim is always for students to grasp the fundamentals of craft." less...
