"I’m Michael! For the last 20 years I’ve worked one-on-one with high school and early college students at all levels of math and science. I love to take apart a subject into bite-sized pieces, building from the simple to complex. "I’m Michael! For the last 20 years I’ve worked one-on-one with high school and early college students at all levels of math and science. I love to take apart a subject into bite-sized pieces, building from the simple to complex. I have a Bachelors in History with Honors and taught in a public school for a year but the math and science I teach comes from studying textbooks on my own and thinking, “how would I explain that dense stuff so makes sense?” I must do it pretty well because a student wrote that “Michael explains things from multiple angles and goes over it with you as many times as you need to understand. I went from a D to an A-, which was immensely confidence-boosting.”
I have a witty irreverent style and my enthusiasm about the cleverness of calculus, the amazing process of photosynthesis or the compactness of Maxwell’s equations bubbles through. I’m always safe to ask questions of and I tell funny and interesting stories. Did you know Newton invented calculus partly to find out how much wine was in a barrel? Or that the man who invented “e” could write math proofs with one hand while cradling the baby in the other?
I love seeing the light go on in a student’s eyes as they *get* this stuff which has been grinding them into the ground. I also have real answers to the age-old question, “When will I ever use this?” (My sister the marine biologist used statistics to help stop whales from being overhunted.) Also, I know where students tend to make mistakes: I can help you watch for dropped minus signs in the quadratic formula or switching the power rule for derivatives with the one for integrals. And if you're struggling with a problem that's too hard, I can review the things you need to know, giving you easier and then gradually harder problems until you can tackle the monster.
Single and Multi-Var Calculus, Trig, Bio, Chem, Physics, Algebra, Geometry, Stats: I can talk math and still talk human. Let's tame the math and science demon." less...
