"In my first career, I was a tax attorney for over seven years. Outside of my job, I spent my time volunteering with adult literacy non-profit organizations and eventually began teaching adult English Language Learners. In October 2012, while working for an international company, I had the opportunity to teach U.S. income taxation to recent college graduates in Hyderabad, India. I quickly realized my students did not possess the English language skills needed to master the technical material, so I revised the pre-planned lessons to incorporate more vocabulary and grammar. In the evenings, I worked with experienced professionals whose language skills were holding them back from promotions. Through these experiences, I came to realize that I was truly meant to help and support those who are learning English. I went back to school, and I have been working with adult refugees, immigrants, international students, and international business professionals full-time since 2014.
I earned a B.S. in Business Administration (accounting major, political science minor) from Valparaiso University and a J.D. from the University of Missouri (with a certificate in taxation). I completed my M.A. in ESL through Arizona State University in May 2015. I have taught ESL classes for a community college, and I also have worked with a non-profit organization that provides ESL tutoring for adults. I have taught ESL in-person and online (Skype, Zoom, WebEx, Google Meet). I have tutored adults one-on-one and taught in multi-level classes, too.
My love of tutoring began when I was in high school. I gave up my study hall to help others with their difficulties in mathematics and algebra. I enjoy working with people who are seeking to improve themselves and/or their skills. I love empowering people to overcome obstacle or attempt a new challenge!" less...
