"I’m Serge! I graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering over 10 years ago. Since then I’ve had plenty of experience applying that knowledge to real-world problems, specifically in the aerospace industry. One of the most common questions I come across is just how much of what I’ve learned do I apply in my day-to-day job. And the honest response? It varies! Each job role is different, each project has its own characteristics and it pays to learn about everything that schools offer. And that’s where I find myself most drawn to: to help students realize the real-world applications of each lesson.
The majority of my tutoring experience has been in the form of mentoring and some volunteering. I have a direct approach to each subject with a specific focus on explaining the how and especially the why. Because once we understand why something is important, retaining the how becomes significantly easier. Not to mention nobody likes to memorize formulas and rules just to pass a test.
In addition to experience, I have found that knowing a second language has tremendous benefit to being able to visualize a problem in different ways, and to being able to explain a problem (or a solution when necessary) from a different perspective. Oftentimes explaining something in a different way is the difference between just knowing and truly understanding. And knowing Russian - speaking, reading, and writing - has done just that for me.
In addition to being fluent in Russian I have also mentored on subjects such as Mechanical Engineering Principles, 3D Modeling and Drafting, Algebra, Geometry, Production Engineering, and a variety of Microsoft products including Excel and Project.
My goal is to ensure students are able to understand the topics in question. Feel free to reach out with any additional questions or to schedule a lesson!" less...
