"I am a teacher with experience in all elementary grades. For many years, I have tutored individual or small groups of students in reading and math. Most recently, I was a literacy tutor working with 3rd - 5th graders. It was a fabulous position working with small groups of like ability levels. I have found individual and small group sessions to be a great way to connect with students, and find the best ways to help them learn. Students often feel more comfortable in a small group setting, and will ask more questions or for more help. It is extremely gratifying to me when a student makes a breakthrough in a subject and really begins to understand it.
When working with students, I always try to adapt the lessons to their interests in order to keep them engaged. If a students has an interest in the subject, they'll enjoy the work more and often work much harder. All students can succeed if we find techniques that work for them! With elementary math, topics can be broken down to make them clear to the students. Using manipulative materials for hands on learning is very useful, and makes the concepts more concrete for students. I always find books/reading passages that interest the students to keep them engaged. Writing projects are also adapted to fit the students ability and interests.
I truly enjoy working with elementary aged students. The progress they make with individual help can be remarkable, and that progress is incredibly satisfying for both the students and me!" less...
