"I am a lifelong musician and music lover who is here to help anyone along in their understanding and application of musical concepts. I have studied theory and composition extensively at Hobart college, where I tutored as an undergraduate, and have applied this knowledge in my own practice as well as in teaching guitar and working as a musician over the past decade. I believe that music theory is important for musicians and music lovers alike, and can be approached in a practical and sensible way.
My approach to understanding music theory is to connect it with our broader experience of music. This means bridging theory with active listening, being able to hear and see these concepts play out in a variety of musical contexts, from their historical origins to modern styles. I can help in building proper music theory foundations such as learning to read music, understand and identify intervals, chords, and anything that would be in introductory theory courses. From there, we can go all the way to advanced theory practices such as analysis, ear training, counterpoint, and composition.
All too often I have met people who were nervous to study theory, generally because it was first presented to them in a way that was overly complex and daunting. It is my opinion that even advanced concepts can be presented in a way that is approachable and logical. In addition to theory, I can provide tutoring in many topics that are essential to pursuing music at a college level, including music history, technology, and playing piano. I pride myself on my professionalism and patience, and my personal measure of success is that I make learning a positive experience. I cater my approach to your goals and learning style, and will always try to find a way to help things make sense to you." less...
