"Hello, and thanks for visiting my page! I'm Peter. I have been teaching at the college level for about seven years now, during which time I have also tutored high-school- and college-level students in Writing, Latin and Ancient Greek languages, and Greek and Roman literature, culture, and history. My approach to tutoring is very flexible: I am happy to set up a structured syllabus for our meetings, to let you take the reins, or something in between. The same is true for how I teach languages: I am capable of teaching with both traditional and more modern techniques. I understand that I am here to offer you or your child guidance in some subset of knowledge as a professional, but I also strive to do so in a light-hearted and creative ways. In fact, I pride myself on my ability to work well with students of all ages.
I have enjoyed learning new languages, teaching, and presenting since I was young, and my interest in history really came out in high school. In college, I became fascinated with ancient Greek history (mostly because of an excellent professor), and that is when I began learning ancient Greek, then Latin and the history and culture of ancient Rome. In graduate school, I had the opportunity to travel and to pick up some modern Greek, Italian, French and German as I worked toward my PhD in Classical Studies. That breadth of experience has given me all sorts of techniques for explaining and reframing the intricate aspects of those ancient, foreign languages, literatures, and histories.
On a more personal note, a large part of why I love teaching rests on the same reason that I love learning about other cultures and languages: both offer a chance to discover new ways of thinking and approaching the world around us. That mindset makes me a patient and engaged instructor. I am open to suggestions and changes at any point in the process, and I do my best to respond in a very timely manner. Please don't hesitate to reach out with questions!" less...
