"Hello there! My name is Michelle, and I enjoy learning languages as a hobby. I love the English language, but I also have a particular interest in Asian languages, which lead me to study Japanese and Korean in college as well as in my spare time. I find language learning pure fun and endlessly interesting; although it is hard work to dedicate oneself to learning a language, to be sure, I want to share with others the knowledge and skills I have worked so hard to earn and hopefully also share my enthusiasm for it!
English was not my major in college, but it was my favorite subject throughout my education. I participated in spelling bees in elementary school, and I have always enjoyed studying grammar and writing essays. I have been praised for my writing skills in the workplace post-college. While I was a college student, I worked for an exchange program at Western Washington University for two years which allowed me to work closely with ESL students studying abroad in the United States from Japan. I also earned a 120-hour online TEFL certification from Bridge TEFL in April 2016.
I studied Japanese for two years at Columbia Basin College through the Running Start program; I then went on to earn a minor in Japanese at Western Washington University. I have been speaking Japanese now for 10 years. I also lived in Seoul, South Korea for 11 months as an exchange student in 2013 and participated in a full immersion Korean language program at Yonsei University while I was there.
I believe my experiences thus far in life have given me a good understanding of both the teacher and student sides of the language-learning experience, and I feel confident that this will help me in effectively tutoring potential students.
