"Currently, I am working on my PhD in Biomedical Sciences at UMass Chan Medical School, where I study Genetics and Bioinformatics. I have a Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences from Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and a Bachelor's in Biology from the University of Maine. I also obtained a Graduate Certificate in Public Health from the University of New England for completing the coursework portion of an MPH degree but chose not to complete the internship part, so I couldn't get the complete master's degree.
I have been tutoring chemistry since I was in high school (12+ years ago). Since then I have tutored high school, college, and graduate-level chemistry and biology courses for various companies, schools/universities, and freelance. Additionally, I have TA'd several classes including Chemistry, Genetics, and Biology- throughout my undergraduate and graduate schooling.
Over the last 7 years, I have worked extensively with TRIO programs at the high school and college levels, where I developed tutoring programs, mentored students, and served as an academic counselor. I have a lot of experience adjusting my content to the needs of the individual students I am working with.
My philosophy on tutoring and teaching is to learn by doing. I like to teach by working through problem sets.
Over the years I have collected a stash of problem sets for various chemistry, biochem, and biology topics. I will work with you to find out what material you are struggling with and build a problem set designed to help you master that material. Our sessions will be spent working through problem sets and reinforcing concepts. That said for students who need more of a teaching approach, I am happy to break things down in a more teaching/concepts way rather than in a problem-based approach.
I try to answer expert questions here on Wyzant when I have time to give you some examples of my teaching style, please feel free to check those out to see if we would be a good fit.
So let's get to learning!" less...
