"Howdy! My name is Lex, and I was raised just outside of Austin, TX.
Growing up, I often found school frustrating due to my struggles with ADHD and Sensory Processing Disorder. Although I was able to obtain acceptable grades, I was incredibly disheartened by a frequent sensation of feeling out of the loop and inappropriately slower than my peers.
Luckily, with the support of my parents, 504 accommodations, and some very patient teachers and tutors, I was not only able to survive the perils of K-12 education, but also thrived as an undergraduate student at Knox College, where I graduated valedictorian of the Class of 2021 with a major in English Literature and a double minor in Spanish and Anthropology/Sociology.
My mission as a tutor is to find a way of teaching that matches each individual student's learning style instead of attempting to teach to a general audience. In addition to my 4+ years of experience tutoring children and adults alike, I taught English, history, and lower-level Spanish to middle and high school students at a private school here in Austin from 2022-2024. Many of these students had negative prior experiences with educational environments and dealt with a variety of learning differences, including ADHD, ASD, and dyslexia. I am proud to say that I was able to successfully connect with, advocate for, and encourage a love of learning in my students, including a few who informed me the first day of class that they hated the subject I was teaching them!
In my free time, I enjoy reading, writing, and playing music. I am a big fan of experimental art and literature. I am very curious about the world around me and love learning about different cultures and beliefs. Currently, I am pursuing my master's degree in Library Science via the University of North Texas's online master's program.
In my mind, tutoring should be a collaborative process in which the student and tutor work together to best address the student's needs. Sign up for a meeting with me so we can identify your goals!" less...
