"Hi, I’m Dane! I am a passionate mathematics and statistics tutor of 7+ years. I tutor because I love math, and I love making it "click" for my students. I mainly work with high school seniors and 1st- to 2nd-year college students in statistics, discrete structures, and calculus, and I also have experience with middle schoolers and older adults. I tutor in several other subjects—most frequently physics, logic, and writing.
I try to make my lessons more of a conversation than a lecture. Doing math can be overwhelming even if you like it, and I sometimes wish my own introduction to certain topics had been more tailored. I believe the most important skill in a STEM class is knowing all of your precise definitions, followed by carefully applying the definitions to problems. Many students find it helpful when I provide a flowchart or formula sheet, tailored to their class, to get all the concepts in one place.
Some background: I grew up near Folsom, CA and completed my community college district’s mathematics curriculum with a 4.0 GPA before graduating from high school. I transferred to UCLA and earned a B.S. in Mathematics of Computation and a Philosophy minor in 2024. I have conducted independent research at universities across the U.S., with experience in topics including optimization, image processing, vector calculus, combinatorics, and graph theory, and I have authored 3 preprints and presented at conferences in 5 U.S. states.
I received a score of 1530 on the SAT and a perfect score of 800 on the (now-discontinued) SAT level-2 mathematics subject test, and I am happy to help high school students with test prep if desired. I have also successfully prepared students for AP tests and entrance examinations.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile! If it resonates with you or you have any inquiries (either for you or your child), please do reach out. My rates are negotiable, but I generally request $50/hr for online lessons and $60/hr for in-person lessons." less...
