"Hello! My name is April. I'm an undergrad student majoring in Biological Systems Engineering and minoring in Chemistry. Since recognizing my affinity for teaching, I intend to go to grad school and one day become a college professor. It's rewarding for me to see the confidence and excitement people gain when they begin to understand something that they didn't before, and to know that I was a part of it.
In high school, I created and led a STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math) club for gifted 3rd-5th grade students at a local elementary school, creating lesson plans around the interests of the kids and topics I felt were important to broaden their horizons. The students would tell me the club was their favorite part of the week, and I believe it was from being seen as an individual and not one of many. It was then that I learned the importance of individual attention for some students to help them thrive.
I graduated high school with my associate's degree and went on to a 4 year university. My classmates look to me as a friendly study buddy. Last year I was also the assistant band director at the high school I graduated from. I directed the lower of two bands and worked with students from both bands one on one. This past summer, I taught flute lessons. While some of these experiences were not in academic subjects, they taught me valuable lessons on how to adapt to the way people learn and how I can teach more efficiently without frustrating or discouraging my students.
My purpose with tutoring right now is mainly to build on my skills and hopefully make a difference for a couple people! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to set up lessons!" less...
