"I am an anatomy and physiology education nerd. I have a bachelor's degree in biology from Abilene Christian University and a Ph.D. in Biological Education from the University of Northern Colorado. My Ph.D. research was about how biomedical science is taught and learned, and I focused on identifying ways to help undergraduate anatomy and physiology students learn challenging science concepts. That research informs my approach to teaching college-level biology. I have seven years of college-level teaching experience and continue to teach community college biology classes, and have taught Anatomy and Physiology I and II for nursing and allied health students, Mammalian Physiology for biology majors, and introductory biology courses. Additionally, I have experience tutoring introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, and neuroanatomy with individual and small groups of students. Overall, I have taught over 1000 anatomy and physiology students - through this experience, I know which topics are most confusing and how to clarify these ideas to promote student understanding.
I offer personalized tutoring to help strengthen a student's grasp of the subject matter and identify how to use high-impact study strategies. My approach to tutoring is to help students build understanding, typically using models or diagrams to support learning and retention through multiple modalities (primarily, matching visual and auditory explanations). During sessions, I start by asking questions to identify where students feel comfortable with the content. Then, we work our way past this comfort zone by asking questions, exploring solutions, and answering practice questions to check understanding. I end sessions by asking students to explain the concept as if teaching it to a friend. My aim for our sessions is that students will gain confidence in their understanding of complex biological systems." less...
