"My name is Mike. I'm currently a visiting assistant professor at UNT, where my position focuses on research in number theory and also has a teaching component. I obtained my PhD in math from the University of Tennessee, where I have gained a wealth of teaching knowledge and experience.
I've tutored in various parts of DFW during my undergrad and masters programs, and I used to work at Mathnasium of Coppell before starting my masters program. I've taught math throughout both of my graduate programs, which total to 7 years of official teaching experience.
My tutoring experience ranges from high school and middle school math to advanced college mathematics. I have taught the calculus sequence many times in my career as well as college algebra in various forms. I also taught a summer course in advanced linear algebra to graduate students at the University of Tennessee during my final year.
My teaching style is best described as a mix of Socratic/conversational dialogue and classical methods of presenting information (on a piece of paper, a chalk/white board, etc. Nothing fancy is needed). It is pointless to purely demonstrate information to the student without having the student's input and participation. Thus, I believe that healthy learning comes from healthy two-way dialogue. The student and I "figure it out together".
I generally have very positive reviews on ratemyprofessor (from both UNT and UTK) and have inadvertently converted many students to become math majors. I hope that I can help you learn to love math as much as I do!" less...
