"Since earning my PhD in history from Georgetown in 2020, I've been teaching college full time in the Bay Area (I've designed and taught courses in California History, Social Justice in US History, the US History Survey, African American History, Historiography, the History of Capitalism, Black Internationalism, Ideas in American History, and Education and Democracy. I've won grants from Harvard, The University of Wisconsin, and NYU, and I've given talks at a bunch of conferences.
Before I got my PhD I earned a teaching credential, and I spent three years teaching US History, Modern World History, Economics, and Government to Bay Area 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Drawing on this experience, I designed and currently teach a course preparing future history teachers for the history classroom.
While I was getting my teaching credential I worked full-time as a private tutor for two brothers (aged 9-11 and 11-13), so I have professional experience at age levels from 9 year olds to late-in-life learners. I also have a 6 year old and a 2 year old.
I've had articles published in peer reviewed journals, and I'm completing a book on the ideas behind radical politics in the US in the 1950s-1970s (under contract with the University of North Carolina Press). In addition to all the writing I've done, I've graded a couple thousand pages of student essays over the last four years, so I can definitely help with writing--either for class or for college application essays. I have experience with AP History prep, as well as GRE prep, and I got a perfect score on the writing/ verbal reasoning portion of my GRE.
Bringing together my background as a high school teacher together with my academic work, I focus on finding ways to make material relatable to students regardless of their academic level or prior interest. I focus on historical thinking skills and historical literacy in ways that lead both to deeper understanding, and help to contextualize the facts of history." less...
