"I consider myself unique because I have taught French at many levels--junior high, high school, college, adults. I hold a B.A.(Honors) French, Diploma in Education. Dip.Ed. I taught first at St. Edward's secondary school in Freetown, Sierra Leone, preparing students to enter college. I taught grades 7-12 at St. Patrick's high in Monrovia, Liberia. At the Institute for French Studies in Monrovia, I trained French teachers who taught in high schools. In Washington, DC, I taught at The World Bank, The International Monetary Fund, teaching Executives at these Institutions on behalf of the International Center of Language Studies, WASHINGTON, DC.
My method of teaching is simple and interesting, helping to hold the student's interest throughout, never a dull moment. First I introduce the topic, say possessive pronouns. Explain what they mean, how they function in a sentence, giving equivalents in English, doing drills. Once they grasp the concept, we go over the lesson, reinforcing the subtle details students are prone to finding difficult or miss.Once I realize the gaps in knowledge, we go over those fine points, asking questions related to the lesson. We end the lesson with a summary of what we learned.
The next lesson will begin with a review of the previous lesson before introducing the new lesson. A language is meant to be spoken. This means I attach much importance to conversational French. I start by keeping in mind the student's age and level. I engage the student in conversation using vocabulary he/she could have learned in class or elsewhere. I throw in new words, challenging the student, thereby broadening his/her horizon. French grammar is the aspect of the language my colleagues, the French Expats at The Institute for French Studies decided should be one of my areas of expertise. Grammar is a big component in my french lessons. Some of these students will be future French teachers. Without a good background in grammar writing, reading and conversation will will be difficult.
