"My love for tutoring and homeschooling goes back to 1991 at a small school outside of Cleveland. I was a rookie elementary school teacher putting on mummy-wrapping ceremonies, studying children’s novels, and erecting classroom wigwams. Five years in, I decided it was time for night school. Seven years later, I emerged with two master’s degrees, one in Curriculum & Instruction and the other in English Literature.
By 2019, I had long put these degrees into practice as a secondary English and humanities teacher (grades 7-college), launching Advanced Placement English programs at two separate independent schools, and later teaching both composition and literature courses at the local state college where I also tutored in the writing center. Spending time helping individual students after school was nothing new. But it wasn’t until the onset of the pandemic that a few parents asked me to consider homeschooling their teenagers one-on-one. I would design my own curriculum, all the accompanying assessments and projects, and get it accredited. To this day, I relish thinking of better ways to advance the learning of one student at a time.
Having worked with all ages from across the globe gives me an edge in helping diverse learners at all levels of achievement and backgrounds. Teaching a variety of humanities subjects also makes me uniquely suited to help students with their reading and writing across the curriculum. Add to this my experience as a traditionally published writer and a freelance editor, and you might say that my toolbox is full. I regularly use active approaches to reading and learning—such as response journaling, annotating, and outlining—and emphasize the various stages of the writing process, from invention and brainstorming, to drafting and revision. My editorial clients and tutees alike benefit from my support, growing as writers and getting into their first-choice schools." less...
