"I started my teaching career 22 years ago after obtaining my Bachelor of Education from Bowling Green State University. After 3 years of teaching, I moved into the district that I currently work in and began working on my Master of Administration at Xavier University. I have been teaching 4th grade math for the last 18 years and off and on throughout those years, I have been tutoring off and on. This year I moved into a math intervention teacher role in which I work with 3rd and 4th grade students. This is basically like small group math tutoring throughout the day.
Students come to me for 30 minutes at a time and have a very structured time with me. I am very passionate about math routines and discussions so that is what we always start are time off with. I feel it is important to use math vocabulary in everyday math discussions. We spend 5 minutes with a math starter and then move into the bulk the lesson. Our main focus for the year is building foundational math skills to lead to success in grade level work. We end each session with a word problem to help students apply what we have been working on.
My math teaching is rooted in the belief that math is learned by doing. It is not by sitting on a computer and doing work. Students need hands on experience to make a concrete connection to what they are learning." less...
