"With over twenty years experience in education, I have taught in middle school, high school, and college classrooms. I've been a featured presenter at numerous teachers' conferences, and have created science and computer science curriculum that are currently in use in middle schools and high schools nationwide. Additionally, I have published several articles and been invited as a speaker or panelist for my research on learning processes.
As a public, private, and research educator, I've found myself further removed from the one-on-one interactions that make teaching so much fun. The most rewarding part of being an educator is watching your students reach the "ah ha!" moment when they latch on to a new concept. The pandemic has made it clear that now more than ever, students need extra help to succeed in remote/blended learning environments.
I hold a PhD in Cognitive Ecology (a blend of psychology, evolutionary biology, and ecology), and have written and delivered numerous lab, field, and lecture courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. As an educator, I have always placed an emphasis on place-based and project-based learning, so I am able to teach students from first principles.
I have developed curriculum and taught courses* in the following subjects:
Middle School:
--Chemistry (with Lab)
--Physics (with Lab)
--Biology (with Lab)
High School:
--Biology & Honors Biology (with Lab)
--AP Biology (with Lab)
--AP Computer Science
College:
--Intro Biology (with Lab)
--Ecology & Evolution (with Lab)
--Primatology
--Field Animal Behavior
--Animal Behavior
--Writing For Biological Sciences
--Preparing for Independent Research
*Courses taught in pedagogy and program evaluation not included.
I suppose this summary makes me sound drab, but I can assure you, I have done all this work in education because I believe that learning should be fun and inspiring. No one should ever be bored learning about science--even the most challenging subjects can inspire and delight when broken down properly!
