"I am a native of Indianapolis, IN and have over 10 years of tutoring experience.
I obtained a BA in Economics/Biology from the University of Chicago. I have taught/tutored students of all ages from middle school to college level on both a paid and volunteer basis, primarily in a one on one and small group setting. I have been passionate about serving students from underserved or immigrant backgrounds. My past tutoring experience/students include elementary and middle school students in the Indianapolis area as part of an after school program, middle and high school students from under-resourced schools on Chicago's South Side, and fellow colleagues and classmates (peer tutoring), among others.
My main subjects and strengths include math (algebra, precalc, calculus, statistics; middle school to college level), core sciences (biology, chemistry, anatomy; physiology; high school to college level), and economics (micro, macro, health policy). I also have extensive experience with standardized tests and can assist with SAT, ACT, and MCAT prep. I have received 90 percentile+ scores on SAT/ACT (pre 2016), and the MCAT (post 2015). I have experience in programming and data analysis experience in several languages (Python, STATA, SAS, Tableau, and some others).
My overall approach to tutoring and teaching is that it is a two-sided affair. I recognize that it is not only the responsibility of the student to put in the effort to understand the material, but also the burden of the tutor to explain the concepts in an articulate, comprehensible, and digestible manner. The best professors and teachers I have had in the past embodied this approach. If something is not clicking, it is on the tutor to stay patient, be encouraging, and try new and alternative approaches. I strive to be a lifelong learner, and I also find that one of the best ways to truly master concepts is to teach. Each time I tutor, I find myself learning something new or nuanced which I incorporate into my knowledge base." less...
