"Hello, my name is Verena. I'm a writer, editor, and artist. I have an MFA in Writing with an emphasis in Poetry and my BA was in English, emphasis in literature and critical theory with a minor in Theology. I have an extensive background in workshopping and editing all kinds of writing including essays and creative writing from the high school level through the graduate study level and beyond. I've mainly worked in publishing where I've held multiple editorial positions including Senior Editor. My own creative practice involves writing poetry, painting, and illustrating.
I like tutoring anyone who would like help with their writing, critical thinking, or reading comprehension skills, as well as anyone looking to combine their creative modes. We can customize the lessons depending on your assignments, projects, and goals. For example, I can help you think through and craft an essay, book report, or answers on an important application. I can guide you through analyzing a piece of writing in preparation for a test, or we can workshop through a prose or poetry manuscript you might be preparing to submit as part of an application or publishing proposal. I also proofread and edit longer works as an additional service.
My tutoring style is conversational and seeks to engage all of your creative and critical faculties. If you aren't bringing homework from school for us to discuss, I try to integrate your interests into the assignments. My goal is always to help you understand how to reason and express yourself in language with increasing specificity, clarity, and confidence, while at the same time becoming a more mindful and empathetic thinker.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to schedule a lesson!" less...
