"Years ago I saw a television interview with a writer (I don't remember who it was) who said: "There is no good writing; there is only good rewriting." At the time this was only an interesting and unusual thing to say because my teachers were busy teaching me how to write (or trying to), and none of them mentioned or stressed the importance of rewriting. It was only when I became a writer and editor that I understood that only a writer could say that because only a writer would understand the fundamental importance of rewriting in the process. Writing is all about saying something and then trying to say that same thing in a better way.

I can teach you to think critically about your writing in ways that can improve it. I can teach you how to structure your writing for different purposes and audiences. My experience teaching freshman writing courses at the University of Denver has prepared me for the common problems that all young writers face so that I can help them recognize, understand, and overcome those problems. My experience as an instructional designer has given me a structured approach to learning and teaching that I can apply to the problems of composition. My experience as a technical writer and editor taught me how to help writers of different skill levels to communicate information about many different topics to many different audiences.

Writing is all about telling stories, and people tell stories all the time. My career has been all about helping writers shape their stories so that readers find them useful or interesting. I have helped engineers, students, novelists, bloggers, bank tellers, university vice presidents, CEOs, and Navy and commercial airline pilots tell the stories of how to fix and fly airplanes, build space vehicles, diagnose psychiatric disorders, use computer programs, fix machines, and process student loans.
