I've seen for myself that tutoring increases the students' confidence, and frankly I'm amazed that I had anything to do with that, but like I've said, I've seen it for myself.
Tutoring or teaching requires a great deal of confidence which I have lately recovered. I don't know when or why I lost self-confidence, but now I have it back, along with a great deal of respect for students and teaching. I feel like I'm gifted and can't help but want to help others who aren't gifted in the same way I am.
What makes me a good tutor is my ability to connect with students through their writing. That, coupled with my own ability to write, makes me a good writing tutor. If you take away either of those two qualifications, they you simply cannot tutor anyone. In my youth I read mostly the classics and tended to read material written only by highly rated authors, and when I did otherwise, in other words choosing something to read randomly, I was very surprised at the quality of writing. I tend now to stick to the classics and only highly rated material. I feel this has made me quite the discerning reader and helps immensely in helping others write.
I realize there's a difference between my writing and others' writing, and I understand the difference between teaching concepts and inserting myself and my writing into a student's paper. I feel the student would benefit from my experienced hand at teaching and urge students to give me a try." less...
